When it comes to study abroad opportunities at Northwestern, your options are nearly limitless. In addition to our own summer study abroad courses, we have cooperative arrangements with the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) and a number of other colleges that give you a choice of countries and emphases for a semester-long cross-cultural experience. And in fall 2007, Northwestern launched its own semester-long study abroad program in Romania.

Romania Semester
The Romania Semester, offered every fall, is a Northwestern College program presented in association with New Horizons Foundation, a ministry that seeks to use adventure education and service-learning experiences to help young Romanians develop responsibility, teamwork and trust. It's a unique combination of cross-cultural learning, theory about social development, practice, service, and adventure education.

Australia Studies Centre
The Australia Studies Centre, a CCCU international partner program at the Wesley Institute for Ministry and the Arts, will help you to discover what it means to be a Christian artist and to explore your own calling. You’ll live with a family in Sydney while taking a comprehensive selection of performing arts courses in music, drama, dance and/or design.

China Studies Program
The China Studies Program, offered through the CCCU and Xiamen University, is an interdisciplinary program that will give you an insider’s view of the diversity and culture of China. You’ll make friends with Chinese students while living in the university’s residence hall, studying the Chinese language, and learning about Chinese history, philosophy, arts and public policy.

Latin American Studies Program
The Latin American Studies Program is a CCCU program based in San José, Costa Rica. It features Spanish language study and seminars on Latin culture, history, ecology, politics, economics and religion. You’ll participate in lively classroom exchanges, meet with government and church leaders, and live with a Costa Rican family. You’ll also get the opportunity to work on service projects and travel to nearby nations.

Middle East Studies Program
The Middle East Studies Program places you at the site of thousands of years of history. Based in Cairo, Egypt, this CCCU program will prepare you to live the Christian life in a world that is religiously and culturally pluralistic. You’ll sit with Bedouins for dinner, hear the opinions of Israeli and Palestinian youth, and bargain at an outdoor market. From language to culture to religion to politics—there is much to learn in order to be a true peacemaker.

Russian Studies Program
The Russian Studies Program, offered through the CCCU, gives you an insider’s view of the political and economic events that are influencing Russia and her relationship with the West. Experience the dynamics of change in a post-Communist society and learn how to live out your faith in a multinational and culturally diverse world. You’ll study at a university in Nizhni Novgorod, take classes in the Russian language, and learn about Russian history, literature and politics.

Scholars’ Semester in Oxford
The Scholars’ Semester in Oxford allows you, as a visiting student at England’s Oxford University, to do intensive scholarship in this historic seat of learning. Through this CCCU program, you’ll work with academic tutors to hone your skills and delve into the areas that interest you most. Not only will you study at the Bodleian Library and worship at Christ Church Cathedral, but you’ll be able to debate issues and topics with world-renowned scholars.

Uganda Studies Program
The Uganda Studies Program, another CCCU international partner program, gives you the opportunity to live and study with students from all over East Africa in a country of exquisite natural beauty. You’ll become part of Uganda Christian University’s Honours College in a program that includes home stays, educational trips and service learning.
