Intercultural programs

Northwestern is committed to diversity on campus and diverse experiences for students off campus. Many classes incorporate intercultural experiences and learning. We aim to be culturally sensitive and welcoming to students from all cultures and ethnic groups, and we encourage all students to study or serve in another country or culture during their college years.

A portion of a $2.5 million grant from the Lilly Endowment helps fund regular visits by the Rev. Dr. Brenda Salter-McNeil, founder of Overflow Ministries. Overflow’s mission is to empower people from all racial and ethnic backgrounds to experience healing, reconciliation and justice around the world. Dr. McNeil is working with a team of college faculty and staff so Northwestern can be an agent of racial reconciliation too.

In addition, five students who have hearts for racial reconciliation serve as the campus’s Multicultural Connection (MCC) interns. The MCC interns are ethnic minorities, international students, or students who have lived, studied or served in another culture. Their role is to promote hospitality and mutual understanding in our campus community, particularly with regard to diversity, multicultural awareness and racial sensitivity. They speak in classes, in the residence halls, and to student clubs and organizations.

The 2007-08 MCC interns all served abroad this past summer. They are Kadie Becker, from Center, North Dakota, in Taiwan; Matt Gray, from Ontario, Canada, in Quebec; Tessie Nelson, Shakopee, Minnesota, in Guatemala; Elise Peterson, from Tyler, Minnesota, in Mexico; and Jess Regan, from Council Bluffs, Iowa, in Greece.

Students also can live in or visit the Spanish House or join Enlaces en Cristo Hispanic ministry. And Spanish chapel is offered once a month as an alternative to traditional chapel.
