For six months during 2004–05, Dr. Carl Vandermeulen and his wife, Jan, lived in South Africa. The English and communication studies professor was there as part of a yearlong sabbatical, during which he worked on a manuscript for a book about the teaching of creative writing. It was his third visit to the country, having been there previously to prepare and lead a summer study abroad course for NWC students.

Alan Paton’s novel, Cry, the Beloved Country, first sparked Vandermeulen’s interest in South Africa. The reconciliation work taking place in the nation since apartheid—as well as what he calls the “miracle” of Nelson Mandela’s presidency—heightened that interest.
