Professor DeRuyter spent over 10 years as a social worker before joining Northwestern’s faculty. He was the manager of children and family services for Hope Haven Inc., a nonprofit organization that serves people with disabilities. He also managed a residential home for young men, and has been an in-home therapist for children and their families. He continues to volunteer with various church and community groups.
A Northwestern College graduate, DeRuyter earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He believes that—in light of Christ’s love and sacrifice—all people should be treated with love, respect and dignity, and he brings this worldview into the classroom.
