Internships and field experience for religion students
If you choose to study Christian education or youth ministry, you’ll get practical experience in an area church as part of your major. During your senior year, you’ll work under the direction of a supervising Christian education director or youth pastor and meet weekly with your professor and other field experience students to discuss ways to integrate theory and practice.
For more intensive on-the-job training, consider an internship. You can do one during the school year for academic credit or apply for a paid summer internship position Northwestern offers with the help of a grant from the Lilly Endowment. During the summer of 2008, eight interns are serving full time in churches in Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, Washington and the Virgin Islands, assisting with the life and ministry of the church—primarily with youth—but also in other areas, including coordinating short-term missions, Bible studies, or vacation Bible school.
