Psychology internships
An internship is a great way to get hands-on experience in the psychology field, enhancing what you’ve learned in the classroom and providing networking opportunities for your first job after college.
Northwestern’s psychology majors have a variety of ways to get such experience. Locally, there are agencies like Orange City’s Hope Haven, a residential transitional program for people with disabilities, and Village Northwest in Sheldon, Iowa, a residential treatment center for developmentally and psychologically disabled clients.
Through the Chicago Semester, you can intern in an urban and often cross-cultural setting. Matt Murphy, a 2004 psychology graduate, spent his internship doing gang research for the Great Cities Institute of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Cory Lemmert researched sleep disorders at a medical center in Chicago. Other Chicago Semester internships have allowed Northwestern psychology majors to work with HIV clients at a Christian medical clinic, with teenagers at a residential treatment center, and with teenage mothers at a Christian organization that facilitates basic skills and independence.
If you’re looking for more opportunities to learn while you serve, Northwestern also offers Spring Service Project trips and the Summer of Service (SOS) program. Psychology major Carrie Stromley’s participation in SOS gave her the chance to travel to India, where she worked at Mother Teresa’s Home for the Dying and Destitute.
