Political science internships
American Studies Program
Nearly half of Northwestern’s political science majors take advantage of the American Studies Program (ASP), offered through the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities. The semester-long program gives college students from throughout the United States the opportunity to work and learn in Washington, D.C. Participants gain hands-on experience through internships with members of Congress, political parties, lobbyists, and nonprofit organizations such as Amnesty International and the Holocaust Museum. They also explore pressing national and international concerns in seminars that are issue-oriented, interdisciplinary, and led by ASP faculty and Washington professionals. The American Studies Program combines biblical reflection, policy analysis and real-world experience in a way that prepares students to live faithfully in contemporary society as followers of Christ.
Chicago Semester
The Chicago Semester is another internship/study program that combines practical work experience with seminar-style classes. Offered through Trinity Christian College, it helps students integrate their lives around Christian social values, develop an understanding of the city and its culture, and identify a vocational calling.
Other internships
The American Studies Program and the Chicago Semester aren’t the only ways to enjoy the benefits of an internship. Opportunities to gain practical work experience are available locally and beyond northwest Iowa. Options range from national organizations to state legislatures to local government. Northwestern students have interned with the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., and the Center for Public Justice in Annapolis, Md.; in the Sioux County Attorney’s Office; and for Rep. John Thune of South Dakota and Congressman Steve King of Iowa.
