Politics affect every aspect of our lives, from how much of our paychecks goes to taxes to how we are viewed by other nations. As a political science major, you’ll explore the inner workings of American government and public policy. You’ll compare our political system with those of other countries, study international relations, and examine issues of global importance.

At Northwestern, however, we’re not content to stop there. Government, according to the Bible, is intended to restrain evil, secure justice and promote order in society. Social justice makes sense. But what makes for social justice?

Our political science professors will help you wrestle with those questions. You won’t just study health care; you’ll explore the Christian’s response to health care issues. You’ll engage different Christian perspectives on the nature of politics. You’ll ask yourself what is it about your faith that requires you to be public-minded as opposed to expressing your beliefs in a purely private and personal way. In small classes that provide a forum where students can discuss and debate, you’ll be challenged to examine why you believe what you believe—and in the process, you’ll hone your critical thinking and speaking skills.

The study of political science will prepare you for a wide variety of careers, including those in public service, law, journalism, politics and education. It’s also excellent preparation for graduate school. Our majors are attending law school, working for lobby organizations, running for political office, and teaching in high schools and colleges throughout the U.S. More importantly, they’re prepared to take an active role as Christian citizens in our nation and world.
