Supporting your NWC student

Maintaining ties to home are important for college students. Equally important are boundaries that encourage your child's development into an independent adult. So while you may not have a direct role in your student's day-to-day life anymore, you'll still want to send encouragement and let your son or daughter know you still think about them every day:

  • Send photos from home.
  • Send a balloon bouquet: Hannah’s Hallmark (712-707-4910)
  • Send flowers: The Flower Cart (712-737-4902) or Orange City Floral (712-737-4463)
  • Send a pizza certificate: Pizza Hut (712-737-3030) or Pizza Ranch (712-737-3711)
  • Send a birthday cake: Dutch Bakery (712-737-4360)
  • Send a note with a pre-paid phone card.
  • Send a gas card: Casey’s (712-737-9955), Cenex (712-737-3612), Conoco (712-737-4280), Sinclair (712-737-6412)
  • Send a snack package from a local grocery store: Fareway (712-707-9350) Jansen’s Foods (712-737-4848)
  • Send a care package:

Even with the convenience of e-mail and instant messaging, students love to receive mail. And those who receive packages—well, they’re the stars of the college mailroom. You can send anything from homemade snacks to spending money and gift certificates. Or, if what you want to give won’t go through the mail, Northwestern can help you show your student “I’m thinking of you” with one of two on-campus care package options:

Study survival packages – Each December before final exams, you can purchase an “SOS Survival Kit” for your student, supporting your kid and NWC’s Summer of Service (SOS) campus ministry team at the same time. Options include “Snack Sack,” “Fruit Loot” and “Pizza ’n’ Pop.” Parents receive order information during the fall semester. Or, contact NWC’s campus ministry office if you can’t wait until then.

Birthday/celebration cake – The NWC Women’s Auxiliary organization provides cakes or cupcakes to students celebrating birthdays or any other special occasion. Parents receive order information prior to the start of the school year. Or e-mail auxiliary member Betty Ferrell anytime to order a cake or cupcakes. Include your student’s cake and frosting preferences, and the auxiliary will make sure a birthday or other special event away from home still gets celebrated in a first-rate fashion.
