Mission and values

The mission of the nursing department is to promote healing, hope and shalom (health, wholeness and peace) by preparing nurses who will continue Jesus’ healing ministry and advocate for social justice and healthy environments and communities.

It is our desire that Northwestern nursing students …
  • Experience personal, interpersonal and professional development;

  • Become committed to Jesus’ healing ministry as they promote, restore and maintain the holistic health of people in a variety of settings;

  • Are grounded in a Christian worldview and ethic so they can be servant leaders as they advocate for local, national and global health policies and practices that promote shalom;

  • Learn to think critically so they can evaluate, integrate and develop new knowledge to inform their nursing practice; and

  • Gain a foundation for lifelong learning, including graduate education in nursing.

Northwestern’s nursing program is built on these values:
  • A nurse’s “client” may be an individual, family, group or community. Any client is to be treated with respect and honor as an image bearer of God.

  • A client’s environment includes all factors or influences surrounding and interacting with the client. Environment can contribute to health and healing or to the development of disease.

  • Health is defined by more than just physiology. It also requires spiritual, psychological, social and cultural harmony. Access to healthcare is a human right. People have a moral obligation to care for their health if they are to be faithful stewards of what God has given them. Nurses have a sacred duty to advocate for healthy environments and for the just allocation of resources that contribute to individual and community health.

  • Professional nursing is a human science, a performing art and a healing ministry. It requires a unique body of knowledge that enables nurses to facilitate health, wholeness, hope and healing through health promotion, risk reduction and disease prevention; through health restoration and illness and disease management; and through maintenance of health and wholeness.
