Northwestern College officials have expressed a desire to help college students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Contact the registrar’s office, 712-707-7145, for more information.
In addition, numerous efforts are under way throughout the campus to contribute to the relief effort. Northwestern’s Center for Spiritual Formation and Vocation is collecting donations from students, staff and faculty. The funds will be sent to the Siouxland chapter of the American Red Cross and Reformed Church World Service.
Half of the gate proceeds from the football team’s game at Morningside College in Sioux City on Saturday, Sept. 10, will be donated to relief efforts. Northwestern officials encourage a strong turnout from Raider fans.
On Thursday evening, Sept. 8, the NWC community will gather for prayer for the hurricane victims and those offering assistance from 8:30 to 9:30 in Christ Chapel.
On Sept. 16 and 17, the residence life staff will facilitate an all-campus garage sale; all proceeds will go toward hurricane relief efforts. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to contribute sale items. The sale will be held in the Rowenhorst Student Center Mini-Gym on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
At a later date, NWC will provide a way for students, faculty and staff to offer goods to the victims of the hurricane. Most likely, the donations of goods we receive will be funneled to the Gulf Coast through Justice for All.
In addition, campus ministry staff have begun the process of looking into sending groups to serve. Currently, NWC works with five agencies in the region, mainly through the Spring Service Project program: Urban Impact, Trinity Christian Community and Vieux Carre Baptist Church, all in New Orleans; Voice of Calvary Ministries in Jackson, Miss.; and Mendenhall Ministries in Mendenhall, Miss. Officials are investigating the options for mobilizing teams to serve. NWC hopes to provide at least three service opportunities over spring break 2006 through the SSP program and possibly a service opportunity over Christmas break.
