Koene honored by state legislature

Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Piet Koene, instructor in Spanish at Northwestern College and the 2004 Iowa Professor of the Year, was honored at the Iowa Statehouse on April 12. A state Senate resolution commending Koene was introduced by Sen. Dave Mulder, and Koene and his wife, Rosa, met with Gov. Tom Vilsack.

Koene was named the Iowa Professor of the Year in November as part of the U.S. Professors of the Year program, sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Koene is the first Iowa Professor of the Year to come from the western half of the state since the initial state winner was named in 1988.

The resolution, sponsored by Mulder, expresses the Senate’s gratitude to Koene “for his tireless work in promoting the Spanish language and Hispanic culture.” Koene is cited for his passion to “not only teach Spanish to his students but also to expose them to the rich mosaic of Hispanic culture and daily life” and for his efforts to provide translation and other services to the Hispanic community.
