“Some Five Women,” an original play by Northwestern College senior Shelby Vander Molen, will be presented in the England Theatre of the DeWitt Theatre Arts Center Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. Junior Megan Weidner is directing the drama in which five women explore independence, parenthood, growing up and discovering one’s true self amid a constant diet of parental, societal and cultural messages that set confusing expectations. With a keen ear for generational communication differences, Vander Molen has written internal and external dialogue that clips along, especially when her teenaged characters are texting one another in loaded single-word exchanges. Vander Molen’s cast includes a therapist, a mother and three teenage girls, one of whom is also a mother. Junior Denise Cowherd and freshman Jana Latchaw, playing teenage friends, will be joined by Orange City residents Margareta Maxon, playing a teen mom, and April Hubbard and Gail Marincovich, playing a therapist and mother, respectively. Tickets for “Some Five Women” are free, and seating is first-come, first-served. |
