Social work department partners with Romanian agency

In an effort to develop international  internships, Northwestern College's social work department has developed a partnership agreement with New Horizons Foundation, a ministry that seeks to use adventure education and service-learning experiences to help young Romanians develop responsibility, teamwork and trust.

This summer, Valerie Stokes, assistant professor of social work, traveled to Eastern Europe to meet with New Horizons' executive director, Dana Bates,  and a collaborating faculty member at
Romania's University of Petrosani. As a result of their meetings, Northwestern social work majors will have the opportunity to participate in a practicum that will consist of involvement in New Horizons' social capital building efforts through youth development groups.

The agency has 24 IMPACT clubs around the country with youth engaged in service.
Social work students will be engaged in and co-lead IMPACT clubs in the Jiu Valley. The practicums will allow students to complete needed and practical research, as well as learn new skills and develop interests through research.
