Student to perform vocal recital

Northwestern College junior Amber Mehlhaf of Menno, S.D., will present a vocal recital on Tuesday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The public is invited to attend; no admission will be charged. A reception will follow in DeWitt Music Hall.

Mehlhaf, a music performance and elementary education major, will perform several pieces. Lori Vande Brake, staff accompanist, will join her on piano.

Mehlhaf will present a variety of works, including two pieces by Gustav Mahler, a work from Georges Bizet, Joseph Haydn’s With Verdure Clad the Fields Appear from The Creation, and Laudate Dominum by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The mezzo soprano will duet with Andrew Klumpp, a junior music and religion major from Sanborn, Iowa, on La ci darem la mano from Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

In addition to singing other works, Mehlhaf will close the recital with Poor Wandering One from Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan. She will be joined on that piece by vocalists Sarah Shively and Laura Briggs, music majors from Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Grinnell, Iowa, respectively.

Mehlhaf is a member of Northwestern’s A cappella Choir and Heritage Singers, and she serves as a vocal tutor. She is the recipient of an activities scholarship for voice and piano, the McGilvra Scholarship for voice and the Marion Hinds Hospers Competitive Scholarship.
