NWC wins award for 125th commemoration

Northwestern College’s efforts to commemorate its 125th anniversary in 2007–08 have been recognized with a bronze award in the 2009 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District Six awards competition.

The Northwestern entry was in the Excellence in Institutional Relations: Institutional Relations Project category. Other winners in that category were Colorado State University, gold, and the University of Kansas, silver.

Northwestern’s award-winning efforts to celebrate its anniversary centered around three events: Homecoming in October, the inaugural Day of Learning in Community in April, and a community/college party in July. In addition, commemoration of the anniversary was incorporated into other previously existing events and publications as much as possible.

An 11-member committee from a cross-section of the college’s constituencies—faculty, staff, students and alumni—planned the celebration. Goals included increasing awareness of Northwestern’s founding date and history, building pride in Northwestern among its alumni and friends, and giving them an opportunity to reconnect with the college and with each other.

The award was presented at the district’s conference in Kansas City. District Six includes colleges, universities and independent schools in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. Council for Advancement and Support of Education is the professional organization for advancement professionals who work in alumni relations, communications, fundraising, marketing and other areas.

This is the sixth consecutive year Northwestern has received recognition in the district competition. Last year the college’s athletic website received a silver award, and efforts to promote the tuition guarantee program received a bronze award. In 2007 the search piece won a silver award and a series of publications produced for the Imagine capital campaign received a bronze award. Northwestern’s visual identity system won a gold award in 2006. An admissions video received a silver award in 2005. In 2004 a group of recruiting publications received a gold award.
