Northwestern to host Global Vision Week

Friday, November 7, 2008

Northwestern College will host its annual Global Vision Week Nov. 17–21 as part of efforts to recognize cultural differences and honor the unity of people through Christ.

Numerous events will take place throughout the week, starting Monday, Nov. 17, at 10:05 a.m. with John Perkins speaking in chapel about cultural diversity and the unity that can result from such differences. Perkins is the founder of the John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Development, which seeks to advance the principles of Christian community development and racial reconciliation throughout the world. Perkins will also speak in chapel on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 11:05 a.m.

The annual Global Fair will be held in the Fern Smith Hall lobby, beginning Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. International students and those who have served or studied abroad will display pictures and maps and share stories of their experiences.  The study abroad office will also advertise opportunities for students to study abroad next summer. The cafeteria will have a variety of ethnic foods available for the Tuesday evening meal.

An evening worship service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 9 in Christ Chapel. All are welcome to attend. It will be a time for students to worship in ways that may be different to them. On Thursday, Nov. 20, at 9 p.m., The Hub will host a board game night.

Friday will be ethnic dress-up day, with students, faculty and staff encouraged to dress in ethnic garb. Chapel services at 10:05 a.m. will be led by the International Club, sharing songs and stories from different cultures. The International Coffeehouse will take place in the Rowenhorst Student Center at 6:30 p.m., featuring students dancing, singing and providing various forms of entertainment. Free coffee will be provided.

Buttons will be worn all week by faculty, staff and students who have stories to share about different cultures they have encountered and the unity they felt through their experiences.
