Author and film critic to speak at Northwestern

Jeffrey Overstreet, an award-winning author and film critic, will be a guest speaker at Northwestern College on Monday, Nov. 10. Brought to campus by the Lilly Grant initiative, Overstreet will speak in chapel at 10:05 a.m. about seeing movies and culture through eyes of faith.
Overstreet will speak throughout the day at various times and locations. At 10:40 a.m., in the England Proscenium Theatre, he will address several writing and communications classes. Members of the public are welcome to attend this free session.
Overstreet’s evening lecture, “Through a Screen Darkly: A Memoir of Dangerous Moviegoing,” will be held at 7:30 in DeWitt Music Hall’s choir rehearsal room. The presentation shares its title with Overstreet’s nonfiction book, which won a “starred review” from Publisher’s Weekly. The book challenges Christians to see God at work in all of creation, including the art of Hollywood. The evening lecture is free.
Overstreet is a contributing editor for Seattle Pacific University’s Response magazine and writes film reviews for ChristianityTodayMovies.com. He also writes two articles a month for the Image journal website and pens a monthly column entitled “Through a Screen Darkly.” In 2007, the City of the Angels Film Festival presented Overstreet with its Spiritus Award in recognition of his film criticism, and the Evangelical Press Association honored him for his review of “Sophie Scholl: The Final Days.”
Auralia’s Colors, Overstreet’s first fantasy novel, received enthusiastic reviews from Publisher’s Weekly, Image journal and Paste magazine, and was a BookSense Notable selection. Additionally, it was nominated for two Christy Awards. The sequel, Cyndere’s Midnight, was published in September.
