NAPs and your major
A better understanding of the brain and its relationship to the mind and personhood is a valuable addition to majors in a variety of disciplines. NAPs allows students to flexibly incorporate the career concentration with any major for an undergraduate education that is tailored preparation for many cutting-edge careers in neuroscience.
Biology
NAPs will teach you how the nervous system functions at the basic biological level. The career concentration is valuable for students interested in a career in neuroscience research, neurology, psychiatry or other clinical medical professions.
Chemistry
Learn more about how chemicals and drugs affect the nervous system. NAPs is excellent preparation for students interested in a career in biotechnology or pharmaceutical research and development.
Computer science
Add NAPs to your computer science major to better prepare you for a career in artificial intelligence or the field of computational neuroscience, which uses computers to model and probe the workings of the brain and nervous system.
Education
The NAPs career concentration can equip you with knowledge about how the nervous system relates to learning and experience. It’s especially appropriate for special education majors interested in teaching talented and gifted students or students with disabilities.
Philosophy
Explore philosophy of the mind or get a taste of the exciting new fields of neurophilosophy (the philosophical study of the relationship of mind and brain) or neuroethics (the study of the ethical dimensions of novel therapies and manipulations of the nervous system) by adding a NAPs career concentration to your major.
Psychology
NAPs will teach you how the nervous system is thought to function in different psychological states and in the context of different psychological disciplines (e.g., physiological, abnormal and cognitive psychology). The career concentration is valuable for students interested in a career as a psychology researcher, mental health professional, clinical counselor or therapist.
Religion
NAPs is instructive for religion majors interested in biblical anthropology, which examines the nature of human nature (especially the relationship of the mind, soul and brain), or the new field of neurotheology, which is the study of the relationship of the brain/mind to the experience of spiritual reality. It is good preparation for careers that will include pastoral counseling.
Social work
NAPs can help you better understand mental illness and the experience of people who are mentally ill. It will also prepare you to explore the new field of social neuroscience (the study of the neural basis of social and emotional behavior in humans and animals).
