Dr. McGarvey conducts the Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and Brass and Woodwind Quintets. He teaches conducting, instrumental music education and French horn while chairing the music department. He received the Northwestern College Teaching Excellence Award in 1994. McGarvey earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music degree at Western Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree at Taylor University. He plays French horn and serves as assistant conductor for the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra. Active as a guest conductor and clinician, he conducted concerts with the United States Army Band at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., and select ensembles in Venezuela and Ukraine. He previously taught at public schools in Wisconsin and Michigan.
