For Students Day of Learning in Community April 9, 2008
Who are you? Why are you here? For that matter, where is here? Here is a place.
Place is space, location, geography, community. You’ve been influenced by many different places in your life. You were born in a place, raised in a place, and now you live in a different place. Your places have impacted who you are—your values, likes, dislikes, accent, customs, attitudes and even use of slang.
Understanding your place, its influences, and your reactions to it are essential for answering the question of who you are. Who are you in this place—at Northwestern, in Orange City, in Iowa and beyond? How do these places affect your life? How have you affected these places?
On April 9, during Minding Place, the college community will explore these and other questions about place during Northwestern’s first Day of Learning in Community (DLC), when regular classes will be canceled so we all can learn about place together.
Faculty, staff and alumni are exploring place by hosting place-themed sessions on the DLC. We need student hosts too! Apply to host a session (PDF) on Wednesday, April 9. Sessions will be offered from 1:30-2:30 and 3-4 p.m.; content and format is flexible. Individuals or groups can:
- host a workshop, discussion or debate
- read poetry or other original writing
- display an original work of art
- tell a story
- perform (dance, drama, music …)
- or something else …
Applications must be submitted by March 15. Questions can be directed to Dr. Doug Anderson.
