Reserving materials
(for faculty only)

All reserve materials are shelved according to the title of the book or article—not by the author, class or faculty name. It’s helpful to the students working at the library desk if your students know the correct title of the book or article they need. Sometimes a syllabus has a title listed differently than the title we have in the library. Or a chapter from a book is listed, and your students don’t realize they must ask for a book title. Students who work at the library desk only four hours a week do not always know the answers to these problems, and consequently, we cannot give the best service.

There are two types of checkout lengths for the reserve items: two hours or three days.

To place items on reserve:
  • Locate the library materials you want to put on reserve. (At the beginning of each semester, the library staff doesn’t have enough time to research the call numbers and find all the materials that faculty want placed on reserve.)
  • Give the library staff 24 hours advance notice to place items on reserve before your students begin asking for them—not just a few hours before they need to read them for the next day. Work-study students don’t process reserve items, so requests are attended to only when the circulation and reserves coordinator is working.
  • Submit your reserve requests as soon as possible to help avoid a backlog of requests the first week of classes.
  • Fill out and include a reserve request form with the materials you want placed on reserve. The form is available online (PDF) and at the circulation desk.
