Rev. Harlan VanOort pastored churches in Orange City and Yakima, Washington, before becoming Northwestern’s chaplain. As chaplain, he serves as pastor for all Northwestern students while they are away from their home churches and pastors. He also oversees programming for the college’s chapel worship services. VanOort has joined students on short-term mission trips to Texas and Nicaragua and uses his skills as a former electrician to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. A Northwestern College alum, he also has an M.Div. from Western Theological Seminary, Michigan, and is ordained in the Reformed Church in America.
