Fitting in
Originally from India, Abhi grew up in the Middle Eastern country of Oman. He is the third person in his family to attend Northwestern. Abhi serves as one of Northwestern’s Multi-Cultural Connection Interns, helping encourage intercultural understanding across campus. He also is a member of the International Club and the college’s Multi-Ethnic Resource Team. He coordinates discipleship groups in his residence hall, sings in the A cappella Choir, and has participated in a worship team that travels to area churches. He has also acted in the college’s festival of one-act plays and danced in RUSH, a student dance concert.

Feeling at home
“I’m part of the family of international students who can relate to each others’ experience of leaving home, being homesick and adjusting to a new culture. We support and encourage one another. The people in the multicultural affairs office are also extremely warm, welcoming and caring.”

Adjusting
“The students here are very open and friendly. You’re rarely turned down if you need something; in fact, often people will ask if they can help in some way. Other students want to make sure you’re doing well.”

Small-town America
“I like attending college in a small town where there’s a greater focus on making friends and socializing on campus. You learn to be creative when it comes to finding ways to have good, safe fun.”

Profs perspective
“Professors at Northwestern create a safe environment in class for all students, including international students. They are interested in gaining perspectives on different countries and cultures and will ask international students to share their thoughts and views.”

Speaking and writing
“Tutors are available for language learning, and—like all students—international students can access the Writing Center for help writing essays and research papers.”

Faith and learning
“Christian faith is part of everything at Northwestern. Professors are intentional about discussing faith as part of their teaching in a particular field. Every dorm has discipleship groups that are safe, confidential and encouraging environments intended to build one another up in Christ. Chapel is meaningful and enlightening.”
