Faithful learner
Kate picked Northwestern College because she wanted to attend a small Christian liberal arts college with a tight-knit community. She wanted to take courses where she could explore both the academic discipline and the ways in which her faith is integrated with all areas of learning and life. She is eager to discover ways she can better express her developing worldview. In addition to a full load of classes in a variety of disciplines, Kate takes private clarinet lessons and plays in Northwestern’s Symphonic Band, which toured to Mexico during her freshman year.

Deciding not to decide
“I decided on a humanities because I’m interested in multiple areas of study, and I didn’t want to chose just one. I love both English and history, for example, and by majoring in humanities, I get the best of both worlds, as well as opportunities to explore other areas like art, music and theatre.”

Story lover
“I’m studying English because I love reading. I could talk about books forever. And history is just as essential as literature for me. I’m passionate about knowing what has occurred in the lives of people who lived before me. I believe knowledge of our past is crucial.”

Faith in action
“My professors at Northwestern help me explore how my faith influences my worldview and how my worldview does or should affect my actions.”

Learning for life
“I think a humanities major will benefit me in many ways. I hope to gain a broad knowledge of several areas rather than specializing in just one. I think I will be well prepared not only for my future career, but also for my roles as a citizen of this country and future spouse, parent and community member.”
