Making history
Along with majoring in history, Casey is getting endorsements in both secondary education teaching and coaching from Northwestern. He belongs to a Heemstra Brotherhood (see heemstrahall.com), was part of the Black V improv group as a sophomore, and currently is a resident assistant in Heemstra. After he graduates from NWC, Casey plans to join Mission Year, Bart Campolo’s inner-city service program. He eventually plans to teach social studies at an inner-city high school in Milwaukee, Wis.
Having a blast with the past
“The first semester of my freshman year sealed the deal for me when it came to majoring in history. I was originally undecided, but I had a notion I might want to be a high school social studies teacher. When I took Professor Kugler’s Western Civ. class, I was sold on the history department.”
Digging deeper
“I’m fascinated by the different perspectives any given individual can have on history, which I used to think of as being mere facts. My professors do a wonderful job of challenging me to think critically about history so I have more than just a knowledge of history—I have an understanding of it.”
Passionate profs
“The history faculty have a passion for history, and they’re so easy to talk to. When professors love their subject matter and their students, it’s a great situation for the students in that department.”
The big picture
“At Northwestern, I’ve gained a whole education. There are things I’ve learned in my sociology class, my fine arts class and my religion classes that have helped me expand my base of knowledge and understanding. This helps greatly in a major like history, which encompasses all fields through the ages.”
