Dr. Carlson specializes in early national American history through the Civil War, with research interests in reform movements in American history, temperance/prohibition, and American women’s history. He has published in the Journal of the Early Republic and in several historical encyclopedias on temperance and prohibition, and has presented papers at the Organization of American Historians and the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic. A graduate of Seattle Pacific University, Carlson earned a master’s degree from Colorado State University and a doctorate from the University of Illinois. Besides Western Civilization, Carlson teaches American history, including the survey courses, Civil War and Reconstruction, the Vietnam War, and women’s history. Memberships include the Organization of American Historians, the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic, and the Conference on Faith and History.
