Staying healthy in college

The lifestyle changes that accompany living at college can compromise students’ immune systems, and germs can spread more easily among people who are living closely together. Follow these tips to stay as healthy as possible while at college:
  • Eat healthy and drink plenty of fluids, especially when you are sick so you don’t become dehydrated.

  • Get plenty of sleep! Chronic sleep deprivation can weaken your immune system.

  • Wash your hands frequently. If you're unable to wash your hands, use alcohol hand sanitizer, liberally available across campus, including in the cafeteria. Keep a small bottle of sanitizer in your backpack or pocket.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth until you can wash or sanitize your hands.
  • Cough or sneeze into your sleeve. If you cough or sneeze into your hand, or even into a tissue, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer as soon as possible.

  • Get a flu shot during the college’s annual flu shot clinic, usually in November.

  • Stay in your room when you are sick. E-mail your professors for assignments, and enlist the help of your roommate, RA or RD with meals.
