FAQ: College health
Q: Do I need to have a physical every year?
A: Physicals are required for incoming freshmen and transfer students. After that, only athletes are required to file results of an annual physical with the campus nurse. Athletes can download their physical forms (PDF). Physical forms are also available from coaches, athletic trainers or the campus nurse.
Q: What immunizations are required for admittance to Northwestern College?
A: Students must have had a tetanus shot within the last 10 years and two MMRs (measles, mumps, rubella immunization—which most will have had before going to elementary school). The hepatitis B vaccine series and the conjugate meningitis vaccine are STRONGLY recommended. Recent literature also recommends a Tdap booster between the ages of 11 and 19 years. Read more ...
Q: Do I really need the meningitis vaccine?
A: This is something to discuss with your parents and physician. Northwestern College health services strongly recommends the new conjugate meningitis vaccine for all incoming freshmen and transfer students living in the residence halls because contracting the disease could be life threatening. Learn more about meningitis and the vaccine. Contact Northwestern’s nurse, Ev Otten, with any questions you may have.
Q: Can I get the meningitis vaccine at Northwestern?
A: Our local public health provider, Community Health Partners, will offer the vaccine during the fall semester. The cost of the vaccine is approximately $130 (and subject to change). If you get the vaccine through Community Health Partners, insurance will not cover the immunization. For possible insurance coverage for the vaccine, get the shot from your regular health care provider.
Q: Why do I need a TB test?
A: Having this information on file gives the campus nurse a baseline to work from should we ever have an active TB case on campus.
Q: I have allergies; can I get my shots on campus?
A: Allergy shots are given at the Orange City Area Health System medical clinic, just east of campus. Call 712-737-2000 to talk to clinic personnel and make arrangements.
Q: What do I do if I get seriously ill while at college?
A: You can walk in to see the campus nurse during office hours, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. You also can call the Orange City Area Health System clinic, 737-2000, or, if the situation is critical, go to the emergency room located at the hospital just east of campus, on Highway 10. If you are seriously ill outside of campus health services hours, contact the Orange City Area Health System at 712-737-4984. If you are unsure what to do, talk to your RA or RD first. For health questions that don’t need immediate attention, you can leave a message for the campus nurse: health@nwciowa.edu or x. 7288.
Q: What if I am too sick to go to class?
A: You are responsible for notifying your RA, RD or the student development office that you will be unable to attend class due to a serious illness or hospitalization. They will contact all your professors.
