Professor Sewell taught French, German and English in New Zealand and Australia to students in grades 7–12. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, and a Diploma of Teaching from the Christchurch Teachers’ College. After arriving in the U.S. in 1998, she embarked on further studies in theology. She earned a Master of Arts degree from Trinity Bible College and Seminary in Newburgh, Indiana, and a Master of Theology from the Free University of Amsterdam. Her knowledge of languages—especially French and Latin but also German and Dutch—is especially useful for her dissertation on John Calvin.
