English language studies
Certificate program for international students
Offered through Northwestern’s foreign languages department, English as a Second Language (ESL) certificate programs (5-week to 1-year programs) are for non-native speakers who want to develop their English skills for professional or personal advancement, or to qualify for admission to Northwestern or other U.S. universities as degree-seeking students.
The programs include intensive English course work designed to help participants achieve proficiency goals in reading, listening, speaking and writing. Program participants are paired with an American student for 1 hour of daily individual tutoring, and living in an English-speaking environment also provides a lot of conversational practice.
