Student employment
On-campus jobs are available to Northwestern students through the federally funded work-study program and through the college’s own campus employment program. Both provide students with a way to earn money for tuition by working in faculty and staff offices, the library, residence halls, the maintenance department and the cafeteria.
The college’s Career Development Center (CDC) keeps listings of on-campus job opportunities along with part-time jobs in the community. Position openings are posted on the NWCareerConnections employment website, in a binder kept in the CDC, and on the Informer, an online message board.
Full-time students with demonstrated financial need are eligible for work-study positions, but first priority is given to students with low income who need a job to pay for college expenses. Financial need is not required for students hired for non-work-study positions.
A typical employment contract consists of five hours per week during the school year, but in some situations, a contract of up to 10 hours is allowed. Summer employment may be available for up to 40 hours per week from May through August. Students are responsible for securing a job on campus.
To be considered for an employment position on campus, every student must complete an IRS Form W-4, an Iowa State Form W-4, and an Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9, which requires proof of a state-issued driver’s license or a state-issued ID card with a photo and an original Social Security card or birth certificate. A passport may be used if these forms of identification are not available.
If you will not be attending summer orientation, you may download, print and complete the Federal W-4 and I-9 forms, as well as Iowa's W-4 form. After doing so, mail all to Northwestern's financial aid office.
