Joonna Trapp, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of English

712-707-7047
jtrapp@nwciowa.edu

The 2002 recipient of the Northwestern Teaching Excellence Award, Dr. Trapp previously taught at a number of Texas colleges while pursuing her doctorate at Texas Christian University. Her dissertation on the lyceum movement in Antebellum Virginia is part of her larger current book project on the lyceum impulse in the Antebellum South. Her research challenges assumptions previously made by scholars who’ve pronounced the South as not interested in reform or education. “A rewriting of Southern culture has become my life’s work,” she says.

Trapp’s publications include a book chapter and articles and reviews in journals such as Dialogue: A Journal for Writing Specialists and Journal of Advanced Composition. She also has presented at conferences hosted by organizations like the American Literature Association, the Rhetoric Society of America, and the Conference on College Composition and Communication. She is active in professional organizations such as the Iowa Network for Women in Higher Education and the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning, serving on the boards of both. She recently began publishing her creative work with a nonfiction essay in New Texas: A Journal of Literature and Culture.

Trapp teaches courses in spiritual writing, debate and persuasion, Gothic literature, film studies and African-American literature.
