Field experiences

Education student Peter De Jong works with children with disabilities during a field trip to Guatemala.
The more experience you have in a teacher/student setting, the more effective you’ll be at handling your first teaching job. That’s why Northwestern provides many opportunities to get into the classroom, beginning with your very first year in the program. Nearly every education class has a field experience component with students in the local K-12 schools. By the time you student teach, you will have spent over 100 hours in school settings.

Your opportunities for practical experience will include observing and assisting in area public and private schools, leading Story Hour at the Orange City Public Library, working at agencies that serve people with disabilities, and presenting programs to local students through the Sioux County Extension Office.

That extensive experience is one of the reasons NWC graduates get high marks for their first year of teaching. In a recent survey, principals wrote of Northwestern first-year teachers:

“He is one of the best first-year teachers I have been able to work with in my 15 years as principal!”

“She is enthusiastic, and that enthusiasm translates into students who are excited to learn.”

“His students have shown significant growth in achievement and behavior.”

“She is wonderful—a naturally talented and outstanding teacher.”
