Dr. Murphy’s research on novice teachers led to her involvement in starting a program for new teachers in Washington state. She taught at various levels, including graduate school programs, and has presented papers at national conferences. Murphy earned a doctorate at Claremont Graduate School/San Diego State University and a master’s degree at Northern Illinois University. She also serves as Northwestern’s first lady and partner to the president, Dr. Bruce Murphy, with whom she team-taught a freshman seminar on integrating faith with learning.
