Counseling mission and philosophy
Student Counseling Services is an integral part of fulfilling Northwestern's mission to educate and respond to the whole person. We function as one part of a community of caring people. The mind, body and spirit are closely interrelated, and a problem in one area almost always creates stress in the others. As therapists, we are interested in the physical, spiritual, emotional and mental health of our clients. We provide a professional counseling service for those students who are facing emotional and relational issues in order for them to experience wholeness in their lives and relationships. Our services are provided with respect for the unique needs of each client in a safe, confidential environment.

It is estimated that one in every three to four Americans will seek therapy for personal problems at some point in their lives. Unresolved personal problems can lead to a host of physical, academic and social difficulties. As therapists, it is our goal to help students resolve their problems, feel better, function more productively and relate in more satisfying ways with other people. We see our clients as the experts on themselves and their life situations, while we are experts in methods of coping, altering behavior and solving problems. In therapy, the client and the therapist form a team, working together toward the client's goals.
