There’s probably no faster-changing field than computer science. If you want to understand, use and design the technology of today and tomorrow, Northwestern offers you a choice of two majors:

Computer science
Computer science is a study of the structure, theory and application of computers and computer software. It’s a mathematical and engineering discipline. You’ll learn how information is represented and organized and how complex data is managed. You’ll also study the historical and societal impact of computers to gain a broader perspective on the field.

Computer information systems
This major focuses on the application of computing to the business world. It’s designed to prepare you for a career in an information systems team or environment by giving you backgrounds in both business and computing. You’ll graduate with the ability to manage databases, run networks or maintain websites, as well as to serve as the liaison between management and computing services.

Both the computer science and computer information systems majors will provide you with the fundamentals and give you hands-on experience with state-of-the-art hardware and software. Not only will you gain the skills for an exciting career working with technology, but you’ll develop the mind behind the computer—graduating with critical and analytical thinking skills.

Because Northwestern requires all its students to take a broad range of core courses, you’ll develop the right side of your brain as well as the left. Strong verbal and written communication skills will prepare you not only for entry-level computer jobs, but also for career changes and advancement to managerial and executive levels.

Northwestern’s Christian commitment, meanwhile, will help you integrate your faith with your studies. You’ll research the issues surrounding the computer world, such as piracy and viruses, and discuss how honesty and integrity are part of being a computer scientist.
