ACM student chapter
Northwestern’s student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is a great way to extend your learning beyond the classroom and to get to know your fellow students and professors. Since ACM is the professional organization for computer scientists, your involvement will score you points with future employers and graduate schools.
Members participate in ACM’s annual regional programming contest, coordinate a programming contest for high school students, and arrange for guest speakers to talk about job opportunities and graduate school. They also sponsor the department’s kick-off picnic at the beginning of the school year as well as pizza parties at Professor Vellinga’s home, take field trips to various places of interest, and participate in service projects.
Membership in the national organization is not required to be part of the student chapter, although it is certainly encouraged. To see all the national organization offers, consult ACM’s website. Ramaker Library has many of the ACM’s magazines, including the monthly Communications of the ACM.
