Before coming to Northwestern, Dr. Vandermeulen taught at Unity Christian High School (English, journalism, photography and psychology) and advised three publications: the newspaper, yearbook and literary arts magazine. His journalism advising led to a guidebook for photojournalists, Photography for Student Publications, and he taught high school photojournalists in weeklong workshops in the U.S. and Canada. He also founded a small literary press, the Middleburg Press.
Vandermeulen’s doctorate is from the University of Nebraska; his research is primarily in the teaching of writing. In 2002, he was primary writer for a grant application to the Lilly Endowment that brought $2 million to Northwestern College. Currently he is working on a manuscript about the teaching of creative writing. In 2004-05, he spent his sabbatical studying the literature and rhetoric of South Africa while living in that country for six months.
