Church ministry interns
Northwestern College is partnering with the church to encourage more students to enter full-time ministry. Toward that end, the religion department offers two programs to help equip and train the next generation of church leaders.
Students majoring in Christian education or youth ministry are required to spend one to two semesters gaining practical experience in a local church. These unpaid positions involve 10 hours per week in exchange for 2 semester hours of academic credit. Participants work under the direction of a supervising pastor, are observed by a member of the religion department, and meet weekly with their professor and other field experience students to discuss what they are learning.
Northwestern also offers paid summer internship positions with the help of a grant from the Lilly Endowment. The Vocare Internship Program is part of the college’s efforts to help students find their place in God’s world. During the summer of 2007, six interns served full time in churches in Arizona, Iowa, Nebraska and Washington—assisting with the life and ministry of the church, primarily with youth, but also in other areas including coordinating short-term missions, Bible studies or Bible school. Half of their salary was paid by the church and half was provided by Northwestern College.
