Why do an internship?

An internship is an academic experience for credit in a work setting supervised jointly by Northwestern College and an associated employer. It is a process of education that integrates a student’s classroom learning with productive work experience in businesses and organizations.

An internship experience is designed to:
  1. Increase students’ understanding through the application of theories and practices learned in the classroom;
  2. Help students better understand their discipline by exposing them to new topics and processes in a non-classroom setting;
  3. Give students experience in an employee/employer relationship and thus prepare them for a more effective transition into a career; and
  4. Provide both students and employers with an opportunity to see the benefits of a liberal arts education.
*Each internship experience earns either 6 or 8 credits, with 2 or 4 credits applying toward a student’s major—at the discretion of the major academic department. Six credits requires 320 internship hours, while 8 requires 420 hours.
