How do I apply for an internship?
- Type and proofread the application form. The form can be found on your computer’s I network drive. (See the folder entitled “Departmental internship forms” in the Career Development Center folder.) Before completing the application, save it as a new document on your G drive or diskette. Once you fill it out, you can print it at no charge in the Career Development Center.
- Pay special attention to the essay (page 1) describing your reasons for wanting to participate and explaining your view of how participation will contribute to your Christian liberal arts education.
- Have your internship faculty supervisor (usually your adviser) read your application and sign it.
- Sign it yourself.
- Return your application form and all other materials to the Career Development Center by the following deadline dates:
-September 30 for a spring semester internship
-March 15 for summer and fall internships
- Other forms that must be in the Career Development Center by the deadline dates include the following:
- Signed legal waiver forms
- Copy of your transcript
- Three recommendation forms: Two from faculty members and one from a student development professional—for example, the dean of students, director of career development, chaplain, director of student activities or an RD (No RAs). Complete the top part of the recommendation forms before asking your referrals to complete and forward them to the Career Development Center.
- Submit a copy of your resumé along with your application. You will be asked to supply more copies of your resumé once your application is approved before internship packets are sent to potential intern hosts.
- Student medical report
- Each student is required to submit the names and phone numbers of 10 organizations for possible internship placement.
- An internship screening committee made up of the vice president for academic affairs, the director of career development, the vice president for student development and a member of the Academic Affairs Committee chosen annually will screen all applications for internships. They will meet as soon as possible after each application deadline. The director of career development will notify you of the results of this screening.
In cases where the screening procedure suggests a student may have physical, emotional or psychological concerns that would seriously jeopardize the potential for a positive off-campus experience, the vice president for academic affairs may exercise the prerogative of requiring written certification from a physician or mental health practitioner attesting to the capability and desirability of the student participating in the off-campus program. If this prerogative is exercised, then only the vice president for academic affairs will have access to this written certification and will make the final judgment as to the student’s participation.
- You will complete an internship learning contract prior to leaving campus the semester before your internship will take place. During your internship, you will be required to:
- Keep a daily journal and submit it periodically to your faculty supervisor.
- Write a reflective paper of at least seven pages to be submitted to your faculty supervisor, due at the end of the semester.
- Do weekly readings related to your internship placement, assigned by your on-site supervisor.
Contact the director of career development to discuss the learning contract and to orient yourself to your prospective placement. This contract must be completed and signed by all involved personnel and submitted to the registrar’s office before you are officially registered for the internship.
- You cannot apply for an internship more than one year in advance.
- NOTE:
- Each internship experience earns either 6 or 8 credits, with 2 or 4 credits applying toward your major—at the discretion of the major academic department. Six credits requires 320 internship hours, while 8 requires 420 hours.
- Each internship will be graded on a pass/no pass basis.
- You will be charged per credit hour for the internship.
- Your signature gives the Career Development Center at Northwestern permission to release your transcripts and resumé to possible internship sites.
