NWC Baseball Falls in Game One
|
May 17, 2007
The Northwestern College baseball team lost game one to #8 Bellevue University, 1-6, in the Plains Super Regional of the 2007 NAIA Baseball Championship. Game two of the best-of-three series will be at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow with game three (if necessary) immediately following the second game. The Super Regional is being played at Westgate Field in Omaha, Neb.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after a two-out single by Nick Rivera scored Dion Parks from second. Bellevue added to their lead in each of the next two innings, as they scored one in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
Northwestern scored in the top of the fifth to cut the lead back to three, 1-4. With one out, Joe Heitritter singled through the left side, advanced to second on a Justin Lane single and moved up to third on a sacrifice by Matt Gray. He then scored on a passed ball before Grant Wall grounded out to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh and NWC trailing 1-4, the Raiders loaded the bases with two outs on three singles by Lane, Gray and Austin Malone. The rally was ended, however, as Jake Jansen grounded into a fielder's choice.
The Bruins added some insurance in their half of the seventh as they scored a pair of runs on four hits to move ahead, 6-1. Bellevue was then able to slam the door on any Red Raider rally in the final two innings and earned the game one win.
Northwestern had 10 hits against the Bruin pitching staff but managed just one extra-base hit (a double by Jake Jansen in the sixth). They also left 10 runners on base, compared to just three by Bellevue. Grant Wall, Codie Zeutenhorst and Justin Lane all had two hits apiece.
Senior Dusty Meyn picked up the loss on the mound as he went 6.1 innings and gave up 10 hits and six earned runs. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Trevor Kuiper pitched the final 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Bellevue ace, Nick Love, earned his 11th win of the season as the freshman scattered nine hits and allowed just one run. He struck out seven in his eight innings pitched.
Game two will be tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. with game three (if necessary) immediately following.
