Raiders Face Elimination at NAIA Region III Baseball Tournament

GAMETIME...#6 Northwestern plays #5 Dakota State in an elimination game at the NAIA Region III baseball tournament. First pitch is at 1:00 pm. The event is being played at Lewis and Clark Park in Sioux City, Iowa.

SCOUTING REPORT...The fourth-seeded Trojans enter today's elimination game against Northwestern with a 39-11 mark. They defeated #2 Sioux Falls, 9-1, in the opening round but lost last night to Jamestown (N.D.), 4-8. During the regular season, DSU placed third in the DAC, behind Dickinson State and Jamestown, with a 10-6 record.

The Trojans are led by DAC Player-of-the-Year, junior Greg Biagi. The shortstop batted .353 with five home runs and a team-high 52 RBIs.Biagi also earned Gold Golve honors for DSU and was 18-21 in stolen bases. Junior first baseman Matt Burpee, also a first team all-DAC selection and Gold Glove recipeint, led the Trojans with a .410 batting average and hit seven home runs. Junior catcher Shea Tonkin batted .333 with eight home runs and 44 RBIs, which also earned first team all-DAC honors.

The DSU pitching staff is led by senior righthander Dustin Ottens who posted a 7-3 record with a 2.01 ERA. The first-team all-DAC selection struck out 44 batters in 62.2 innings while walking just 19.  Junior Kyle Young led the veteran staff with a 1.82 ERA and went 6-1 on the season. He also took home first team honors. Senior Nate Remer (8-1, 2.98 ERA), Josh Tomlin (6-1, 2.72 ERA) and Jason Ciz (4-2, 2.70 ERA) all earned second team honors for DSU.

RED RAIDER REPORT...Northwestern dropped a 4-1 decision to #4 Briar Cliff yesterday to drop to the loser's bracket of the regional tournament. The sixth seeded Red Raiders are 34-16 overall and face DSU for the first time this season. Senior Jake Koerselman picked up just his second loss (8-2) of the season as he went 7 2/3 innings and gave up nine hits and four runs. Freshman Andrew Engesser pitched the final  1.1 innings in relief and did not give up a hit. Offensively, NWC managed three hits off of Charger starter Jared Jacobs, who picked up the win for BCU. Justin Lane continued to swing a hot bat as he doubled in the second inning and scored the Raiders only run on a sacrifice fly by Matt Gray. Lane now has five hits in two regional games. Brad Payne and Codie Zeutenhorst had the other two hits for NWC.
