Raiders 1-1 After Day One of GPAC Baseball Tournament

May 3, 2007

The Northwestern College baseball team went 1-1 on the first day of the 2007 GPAC Baseball Championships earlier today. The Red Raiders, seeded third, defeated #6 Morningside, 5-4, but then lost 7-8 to #7 Mount Marty in a winner's bracket contest. They will now face #8 Nebraska Wesleyan in an elimination game tomorrow at 12:30 pm, weather permitting. The baseball championships are being played in Hastings, Neb.

Trailing 1-2 in game one versus Morningside, Northwestern scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Mustangs, however, scored two runs in the seventh off of Red Raider ace, Mihai Burlea, to tie the game at four. In the home half of the seventh, Codie Zeutenhorst and Michael Janssen drew back-to-back walks with one out. Joe Heitritter then singled to center but Zeutenhorst got forced out at third on the play for the second out. Curtis Bomgaars followed with a two-out, RBI single which scored Janssen from second for the game-winner.

Six different Raiders had a hit in the contest, led by Janssen who ripped a two-run double and scored a run. Grant Wall went 1-3 with a run and Justin Lane went 1-2 with a run-scoring double.

Burlea remained unbeaten this season with his 10th win. The junior hurler pitched seven innings and gave up four hits, four runs, seven walks and struck out six.

In the second game, Northwestern lost to #7 Mount Marty, 8-7, in a winner's bracket matchup. The Red Raiders led early on, 1-0 and 3-2, before the Lancers tied the game at three in the third inning. NWC responded with one run in the fourth before Mount Marty grabbed the lead again in the fourth with two runs off NWC starter, Dusty Meyn. Coach Wede's club tied the game up once again in the fifth with a run, only to have the Lancers answer back with one run in the bottom of inning to lead, 6-5. Northwestern seized the lead back in the sixth as they scored two runs off a two-run single by Justin Lane. In the bottom of the sixth, however, Mount Marty scored two unearned runs off of Lane to get the win, 8-7.

Wall, Janssen and Jake Jansen all had two hits for Northwestern, who totaled 10 hits as a team. Meyn pitched the first five innings and gave up 11 hits and six runs. Lane, who dropped to 0-2 on the season, gave up two runs and struck out two.

Coach Wede's squad will play tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against #8 Nebraska Wesleyan in an elimination game.
