Northwestern and Morningside to Square Off in GPAC Tournament

Northwestern will face Morningside in the first round of the GPAC Tournament.  The GPAC Tournament is an eight team double elimination tournament, with the winner securing a bid to the Region III Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.  Northwestern finished in a tie for third place with Dakota Wesleyan and by way of tie breakers was named the three seed and will face Morningside, the six seed.  Other round one games include, Sioux Falls versus Nebraska Wesleyan, Briar Cliff versus Mount Marty, and Dakota Wesleyan versus Midland Lutheran.

GAMETIME...  Thursday, May 3rd at 12:00 PM at Smith Complex in Hastings, Neb.

SCOUTING REPORT... Morningside College finished the regular season 22-21 and was 12-10 in the GPAC.  Offensively the Mustangs are hitting .282 as a team and have a 4.06 team ERA.  Jason Engleman and Jared Noteboom are both hitting .338, highest on the team.  David Manceaux, Nick Paulsen, Tom Kohl, and Scott Nielsen also have batting averages over .300.  Kohl has scored 38 runs and leads the GPAC in steals with 25. 

The Mustangs have a very good pitching staff, led by senior Heath Horsley (7-2, 1.82) and Josh Hansen (7-3, 3.29).  Horsley was the 2004 GPAC Pitcher of the Year and Hansen was a second team all-GPAC pitcher in 2006.  Relief pitcher Eric Delich also has been very good for Coach Scholten, he has a 1.72 ERA and four saves.  Morningside is 4-6 in their last 10 games.

LAST TIME OUT... Northwestern split with Dordt (11-0, 1-4), ending the regular season 31-13.  In game one, Northwestern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first following three walks and two hits by the Raiders.  Northwestern added three runs in the second, fourth, and sixth innings making the score 11-0.  Starter Jake Koerselman (7-1) faced two batters over the minimum throwing six strong innings and allowing only three hits, he also struck out five Defenders.  Northwestern had a total of 13 hits in game one, three by Jake Jansen, two by Michael Janssen and Justin Lane, and one by Austin Malone, Joe Heitritter, Codie Zeutenhorst, Curtis Bomgaars, Brad Payne, and Matt Gray.  Nick Jones scored three runs and Justin Lane drove home three Raiders.

In game two, Northwestern again scored first, scoring a run in the second inning when Justin Lane doubled home Michael Janssen.  That was the only run Northwestern could bring home off Defender starter Nate Daane, who allowed six hits in seven innings.  Northwestern starter Joe Gray (4-6) allowed four runs, four hits, walked five, and struck out four batters.  Austin Malone, Codie Zeutenhorst, Curtis Bomgaars, Lane, and Matt Gray each had hits for Northwestern.

RED RAIDER NOTES... Northwestern is hitting .342 as a team, tops in the GPAC, and has a 3.91 team ERA, also best in the league.  Jake Jansen leads Northwestern with a .472 batting average and has a team best 44 RBI.  Grant Wall leads the Red Raiders in runs scored (42), doubles (18), triples (4), and stolen bases (13).  Codie Zeutenhorst has blasted 11 home runs, tops in the conference.  Jansen set the school record for times hit by pitch (15) and Wall set the school record for doubles (18).

Northwestern also has a very good pitching staff.  Burlea leads Northwestern on the mound with a 9-0 record, he has a 3.23 ERA.  Dusty Meyn paces the team with a 2.88 ERA and is 5-4.  Jake Koerselman (7-1, 3.83) and Joe Grady (4-6, 4.13) round out the league leading staff.  Justin Lane's nine saves is currently second in the GPAC.  Burlea has tied the school record for wins in a season (9); set the school record for strike outs in a season (89), and Northwestern has reached the 30 win mark for the first time in the 40 year history of the program.  The Red Raiders are 7-3 in their last 10 games.
