Northwestern squeeks by Dordt in non-conference action

Northwestern swept Dordt in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday night in Orange City by the scores of 11-10 and 8-5.
In game one, Northwestern used a six run sixth inning rally to take an 11-10 lead and junior closer Justin Lane picked up his eighth save of the season. Dordt College out hit Northwestern 12 to 10, the Defenders were led by Dillon Peters and Jeremy Hilt who both had three hits. Offensively, Northwestern was led by Jake Jansen, Matt Gray, and Michael Janssen who all had multiple hits. Janssen drove in four runs and Joe Heitritter scored three runs for the Red Raiders.
Trevor Kuiper started the game for Northwestern and lasted four innings; he gave up five hits, four runs (three earned), walked two, and struck out two. Stuart Moore and Andrew Brower both pitched in the fifth inning before giving way to senior pitcher Kent Wallinga. Wallinga pitched a scoreless top half of the sixth keeping the Defenders within striking distance and Lane pitched a scoreless inning for the save. Wallinga (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. Northwestern improved to 28-11 overall.
In game two, Northwestern scored seven runs in the second inning in route to an 8-5 victory. Michael Janssen, Justin Boersma, Austin Malone, Joe Heitritter, Jake Jansen, and Curt Bomgaars all had hits for Northwestern in the second inning. Malone hit his second home run of the year with Boersma on first to break a 2-2 tie and give Northwestern a 4-2 lead. Malone, Heitritter, Jansen, and Janssen each had two hits for the Red Raiders who pounded out 10 hits for the second consecutive game.
Freshman Brad Payne (3-0) started the game and picked up his third win of the season. He pitched four innings allowing seven hits, five runs (four earned), walked four, and struck out four. Andrew Engesser pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one, before Justin Lane saved his second game of the night and his ninth of the season. Northwestern improved to 29-11 overall.
Up next Northwestern will host Briar Cliff in a GPAC doubleheader. Game times are set for 4:30/6:30.
