Raiders go 3-1 in GPAC weekend

Apr 23, 2007

Northwestern College and Mt. Marty College split a GPAC doubleheader (0-10, 3-1) on Friday and the Raiders swept Nebraska Wesleyan (15-5, 8-1) on Saturday to move to 12-6 in GPAC play and improved to 27-11 overall.

In game one on Friday, Mt. Marty got to starter Jake Koerselman early scoring two runs in the first and one in the second.  That would be all the run support the Lancers would need because of an outstanding pitching effort from Trey Kreir.  Mt. Marty scored two more in the fourth and added a five spot in the fifth to make the lead 10-0, and ending the game in the bottom of the fifth with two outs.

Koerselman (6-1) took the loss on the mound throwing five and a third innings giving up seven hits, nine runs, and six earned runs.  Andrew Brower threw one third of an inning.  Offensively the Raiders had four hits, two apiece by Jake Jansen and Grant Wall.  Game one was the first time Northwestern had been shut out and ten run ruled all season.

In game two on Friday, Northwestern scored in the first inning following a single and a steal by Wall, and a Jansen RBI single.  Wall was again in the middle of a Raider rally driving in two runs on a two out single, scoring Justin Boersma and Matt Gray, pushing the lead to 3-0.  Joe Grady held the Lancers scoreless the first four innings of the game before giving up an unearned run in the fifth inning, the only run he allowed.  Grady pitched with runners on base every inning and Mt. Marty left 11 runners on base in game two.

Grady (4-5) picked up the win for the Raiders pitching six innings, allowing six hits, walking three, and striking out two.  Justin Lane picked up his seventh save of the season pitching a scoreless seventh inning.  Wall led the Raiders offensive attack going 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored.  Codie Zeutenhorst, Austin Malone, Jake Jansen, and Matt Gray also hat hits for Northwestern.  Jansen also set a Northwestern single season record by getting hit the 14th time this season in the fifth inning.

In game one on Saturday versus Nebraska Wesleyan, Grant Wall smashed the first pitch of the game over the right field fence for a lead-off homer giving Northwestern a one run lead.  The lead was short lived, however, as Andy McGowan, also a leadoff hitting short stop, hit the first pitch to Nebraska Wesleyan over the fence for a home run making the game a 1-1 game.  Northwestern answered in the top of the second inning scoring three runs on four hits including a solo home run by Curtis Bomgaars.  Raider ace Mihai Burlea settled in and struck out the side in the bottom half of the second inning.  Northwestern added five more hits and three runs in the fourth inning making the score 7-2.  McGowan smashed another home run, a three run shot; in the bottom of the fourth inning cutting the Northwestern lead to 7-5, but Northwestern answered by scoring eight runs in the fifth inning on seven hits including another Bomgaars home run and a three run homer by Jake Jansen.

Burlea (8-0) pitched all five innings surrendering nine hits, giving up five runs, and striking out eight.  Offensively, Northwestern was led by Curtis Bomgaars who was two for two, two runs scored, two RBI, two walks, and two solo home runs.  Grant Wall was four for five with three runs scored, four RBI, a double, and a home run.  Austin Malone, Jake Jansen, Michael Janssen, and Matt Gray also had multiple hits for Northwestern who had 18 hits as a team.

In game two on Saturday, Dusty Meyn held Nebraska Wesleyan to one run as Northwestern defeated NWU 8-1.  After two scoreless innings the Red Raiders scored three runs on back-to-back doubles by Matt Gray and Grant Wall, an error, and two RBI ground outs to take a 3-0 lead.  Meyn held the Prairie Wolves scoreless through six innings and Northwestern plated five more runs across in the seventh inning pushing the lead to 8-0.  Wall, who hit his third double of the game, and Joe Heitritter both had extra base hits in the seventh.

Meyn (5-3) tallied his third consecutive with for Northwestern going seven innings, allowing six hits, and one run.  Michael Janssen, Curt Bomgaars, Heitritter, and Gray all had one hit for Northwestern.  Grant Wall went three for four scoring once and driving in two runners.  All three of Wall's hits were doubles, giving him 18 for the season, a new Northwestern single season record.  The Raiders improved to 12-6 in GPAC play and are 27-11 overall following the 3-1 weekend.
