Northwestern and Mt. Marty square off in GPAC doubleheader

GAMETIME...Friday, April 20th at 4:30/6:30 PM in Yankton, S.D. versus Mount Marty College in a GPAC doubleheader.

SCOUTING REPORT...The Lancers improved to 20-12 after a non-conference sweep of Dordt College (13-8, 6-4) on April 17th.  Mt. Marty has won five of its last seven games and is currently 6-8 in GPAC play.  Mt. Marty is hitting .275 as a team and boast a 4.26 team ERA, second in the conference.  The Lancers also lead the GPAC in fielding percentage at a .965 success rate.  Senior Matt Kemp leads Mt. Marty in hitting, posting a .368 batting average.  Cole Knippling, Robb McClemens, Rand Thygeson, and Billy McDonald also post batting averages over .300.  2006 NAIA Honorable Mention All-American Cole Knippling leds the Lancers with 26 runs scored, nine stolen bases, 22 walks, and an on base percentage of .492, good for third in the conference.

On the mound the Lancers are led by Rand Thygeson, who has registered 58 strike outs in 36 1/3 innings.  He also hold a 5-1 record with a 2.97 ERA.  Brady Diercks (3-5, 4.95 ERA), Kevin Kuntz (3-2, 2.40 ERA), and Trey Novotny (3-2, 4.74 ERA) have also seen significant time on the mound.

The Lancers are coached by third year head coach Andy Bernatow.

LAST TIME OUT...Northwestern swept Midland Lutheran in a GPAC doubleheader (4-3, 4-3) to move into third place in the conference with a 9-5 record and improved their overall record to 24-10.  The Raiders got strong pitching performances from ace Mihai Burlea and from Dusty Meyn.  In game one, Burlea improved to 7-0 on the season and increased his school-record strike outs in a season to 77.  Michael Janssen and Codie Zeutenhorst hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning giving them three and 11, respectively.  In game two, Meyn notched the win improving to 4-3 and Justin Lane picked up his sixth save of the season.  Joe Heitritter had two hits and scored three times to pace the Raider offense.  

RED RAIDER NOTES...In the sweep of Midland, Northwestern maintained its league leading .346 batting average and lowered its league leading ERA to 3.75.  Northwestern also moved into a first place tie with Midland with 24 home runs on the season.  Currently Northwestern boasts the 15th best team batting average in the nation, 11th best slugging percentage, and is currently 44 for 45 in steal attempts.  Jake Jansen paces the offense with a GPAC leading .468 batting average and has tied the school record for times hit by a pitch with 13.  Joe Heitritter (.392), Austin Malone (.370), Grant Wall (.368), Michael Janssen (.364), Matt Gray (.337), and Codie Zeutenhorst (.337) all post .300+ batting averages as well.

Burlea leads Northwestern on the mound with a 7-0 record and has a 3.12 ERA.  Dusty Meyn paces the team with a 3.00 ERA and is 4-3.  Jake Koerselman (6-0, 3.51) and Joe Grady (3-5, 4.43) round out the league leading staff.  Justin Lane's six saves is currently second in the GPAC.

NEXT UP...The Raiders travel to Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday, April 21 to face Nebraska Wesleyan in a GPAC double dip.
