Northwestern losses pair to Dana in GPAC play

Apr 14, 2007

Northwestern lost a pair of GPAC games to Dana on Saturday, 9-10 and 2-7.

Northwestern lost game one in extra innings 9-10, on a walk-off single by Mike Smith in the eighth inning.  Raider starter Jake Koerselman gave up nine runs on eleven hits in four innings, including a six spot in the second inning.  After four innings Dana was leading Northwestern 9-2.  The Raiders would not give in, however, scoring six runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to one run.  In the inning Northwestern tallied six hits, two by Austin Malone, and had two walks.  Trevor Kuiper pitched a clean bottom half of the fifth and Northwestern would keep the momentum plating the game tying run in the sixth.  Red Raider closer Justin Lane pitched two scoreless innings and the game headed into extra innings.  Northwestern led off the eighth inning with hits by Matt Gray and Grant Wall and both advanced into scoring position on a past ball, with no one out, but the Raiders failed to drive them in.  Dana managed two consecutive hits with two outs off Lane to set the table for Smith's game winning RBI single.

Northwestern was led offensively by Grant Wall, who was 3-5.  Malone, Lane, and Gray also had two hits for the Raiders who pounded out 12 hits in the game.  Koerselman (6-0) avoided his first loss of the season, Lane was the loser falling to 0-1 on the year.

Northwestern came out swinging in game two scoring two runs in the first inning.  Jake Jansen slammed his fourth home run of the season and Michael Janssen drove in the second run of the inning on a single.  That, however, was all the damage the Raiders would do, managing only five baserunners over the next six innings.

Joe Grady (3-5) took the loss in game two pitching six innings giving up nine hits, seven runs, walking two, and striking out one.  Jansen, Janssen, and Joe Heitritter each had hits for the Raiders who fell to 22-10 overall and 7-5 in GPAC games.
